These hats are part of our Winter MAL list focusing on cables, and a great way to learn cables! Knowledge of basic knitting is a prerequisite (Advanced Beginner level pattern: must already know knit and purl stitches). If you’ve never knit in the round before, we will get you started on that, if you already know, we recommend knitting the ribbing of the hat before class if you can. Either way, we have two classes to make progress!

The Lazy Sunday collection by Tin Can Knits has 2 hat patterns, both of which are great for learning or improving your cable skills. The Westerly has braid cables (darker hat on the left in the picture above), and the Snowglobe has both cables with all knits and cables with knits and purls (lighter hat on the right, still on needles, in the picture above). We will be processing and learning how to read cable charts with either of these hats. Pick the one you like the best and let’s start cabling!

The first session will be on getting started knitting in the round, processing the pattern, and if there is time getting to the cables section. The second session will dive into the cables more in depth, or how to tackle the top of the hat. We work with you where you are in the pattern! The class fee also covers help between sessions or after the class is over, on this project, during the drop in Friday help times. If you need to come another day just contact the shop first.

Please contact the shop (email rebecca@sundragonartandfiber.com or call 828-877-3550) to reserve your spot. We will need your name, phone number, and email.

All group events take place inside in the winter, which means we will be masked as is our shop policy. We can provide masks if you need one. If this policy does not work for you, we understand, and recommend we find a time during the warmer months when we can teach you outside.

When the weather is nice classes meet outside on the plaza and the following guidelines apply:

  • All will be held outside, weather permitting. We will do our best to provide shade, depending on number of attendees.

  • Masks are not required outside, you may wear one if you wish.

  • Please wear a mask when going into the shop for restroom or shopping purposes.

Supply list (supplies bought for this class eligible for 15% discount at checkout in shop, must be mentioned at checkout):

  • Westerly Hat or Snowglobe Hat pattern by Tin Can Knits, $6 each on Ravelry. We can help you get this if needed, not eligible for the 15% discount.

  • Approximately1 100 gram skein of DK/light worsted weight yarn, 200 yards, the amount needed will change depending on what size you are making.

  • US 4 & 7 needles for the Westerly, 4 & 6 needles for the Snowglobe, 16” length for the majority of the hat. You’ll also need the larger size in whatever method of small circumference knitting you wish to try for the very top decreases: Double Points, 2 circular needles, or one longer circular for magic loop. Contact us for advice if you are not sure what to bring/buy.

  • 1 cable needle, size US 6 (4.0 mm) or smaller.

  • tapestry needle (needed when your project is finished)

*no refunds or reduction in price if you can only attend one session. Please contact us about other options if this is the case
